I want to begin by acknowledging the Yuhaviatam (Serrano) First Nation and all those Indigenous First Nations who remain unrecognized, whose unceded stolen traditional Indigenous homelands I call and have called home. I acknowledge that there needs to be a stop to the cruel and continuous removal of Indigenous peoples from their homelands for any reason, including due to rising housing prices. Give land back and respect Indigenous sovereignty! I join my voice to the demand that the forced fragmentation, suppression, dehumanization, and cutting down of Indigenous lands, knowledges, and peoples of the Americas is acknowledged as what it is, a genocide, an extended holocaust that continues to take place under the matrix of colonial power, the current global necropolitical telos that continues to function in detriment of a majority for the benefit of an extreme minority privileged by white supremacy<\/s> in all of its forms. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Reconozco que debe detenerse la cruel y continua expulsi\u00f3n de los pueblos ind\u00edgenas de sus tierras de origen por cualquier motivo, incluso debido al aumento de los precios de vivienda. \u00a1Devuelvan la tierra y respeten la soberan\u00eda ind\u00edgena! To have Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the forefront and go beyond these concepts which were ultimately born from the experience of coloniality, is to understand that diversity is contextually specific as it refers to the fact that we have been receiving a one-sided perspective and been functioning within its limitations as certain peoples have been excluded and denied opportunities due to their ties to historically marginalized communities directly in relation to the impact of colonization and modernity. Inclusion means that we will strive to make sure that we will consciously and particularly respect, listen to, and engage with the perspectives and contributions of historically marginalized communities and more important than all, we will embrace and uphold their impact. Equity does not mean that we all must receive the same, but that we will make real and honest efforts to make sure that those of us who can, will give and provide the necessary support and space to level our privileges and ensure everyone\u2019s dignity is protected and well-being is ensured.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 ACM SIGGRAPH Digital Arts Community\u2019s online exhibition, The Future Past vs. Coloniality: Decolonial Media Art Beyond 530 Years, is <\/em>a selection of 19 works by 29 artists that address different overlapping issues of coloniality affecting humanity around the world through the intersection of art and technology. This exhibition has the goal to shift from the debates of what i<\/em>s digital art and what <\/em>constitutes a sound use of technology for the purposes of art production, to why <\/em>such culturally specific impositions continue to exist unquestioned, who continues to gain from such limited perceptions, and how are individuals, communities, and the entire world negatively affected by these perceptions which represent the effects of coloniality. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The artists and works included in this peer-reviewed selection of The Future Past vs. Coloniality <\/em>are demonstrative of how decolonial media artists have been actively working in the digital and technological arts for many years and how they have been employing them for the purposes of decoloniality, community building, advocacy, activism, redefining the relationship between the arts, sciences, identity, and culture. Digital, oral, and visual formats have spoken specifically to Indigenous cultures in ways in which Eurocentric perceptions are yet to fully grasp. The exhibition is titled The Future Past<\/em>, because our past is the future which the colonialist world only thinks they are now \u201cdiscovering\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Coloniality is what stands in the way of a clear understanding of what diversity, equity, and inclusion look like. Coloniality is rampant in the western Eurocentric conceptualization of the arts. It is alive and well in parallelly conceived and upheld institutions shaped by the internalization and recurrent impositions of systemic racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, classism along many other -isms and phobias disguised as mythical projects such as the one of modernity, capitalism, and neoliberalism.
